RAAF birds, it was in their purchase contract that they'd be destroyed when they ended service.

Also they're full of Asbestos so burying them was safer than turning them into scrap metal.

Yep, I'm glad I got to see them at a few airshows before they were retired. I can remember sitting in one of them when I was 9 too.

My dad was there when they first flew in to Australia in 1968, he was with the Air Force Cadets at the time and they got to have a look. He took some photos but the USAF pilot politely removed the film from his camera.
